One of the heritage and the famous historical places of Mumbai is Victoria and Albert museum. This is one of the first museums that were built in India. It was before known as the Bhau Daji Lad museum. It was named after the person who first gave the idea of having a place where they would collect and keep the objects and things fro the history that would depict the culture of India. The man who gave this idea was Ramkrishna Vitthal Lad also known as Bhau Daji Lad.
This boy presented his idea to the queen empress of India and prince consort. So the building was established and in 1862 it was named as the Victoria and the Albert museum. Now it is under the control of Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
This museum in itself is the depiction of the best architecture of India presenting the great atmosphere and appearance to the tourists from around the globe. Different events and exhibitions are held at this museum from time to time that shows the history and culture of the people of India. This museum is surrounded by the attention-grabbing and colorful gardens.
Different objects are maintained in this museum that includes the following:
- Rock cuts elephants brought by British in 1865 from Elphanta island
- Clay models from the British period
- Firka paintings illustrating Indians costumes, professions and trades
- Old remnants and minerals
- Delicate ivories of elephants
- Mock-up of temples
- Old Bombay and European bric-a-brac photographs
- Statues of English man who once have a prominent place in the sub-continent
- Astonishing and magnificent Armour and garishly colored ‘fruit’ models
- Silver and copper ware that are finely wrote by the old Indians in the historic time
- Photographs of old Bombay
To some of the visitors, the building of the Victoria and Albert museum seems to be too old with old pillars, high painted ceilings and a single story building. But now this building has changed its view and sight. This work is done by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, Mumbai (INTACH). It has become more attractive for the people who come to see the culture and history of Indians.
