Being the financial capital of the country, all classes of people come here with huge plans not to mention the corporate houses and multinational companies. This city has been a land of dreams and people come here to join the film industry or get into jobs from rural areas all adding to the swelling Mumbai population. |

A steady flow of rural population to the city in the form of skilled and semi-skilled labour has lead to the formation of large slum areas in and around the city adding to the Mumbai population. The migrant Mumbai populations are considered the strength of the city as people from all parts of the country come here and contribute to its wealth. This has of late been a political point for the Shiv Sena which is playing the Marathi card for public support. Most of Bollywood actors are migrants or second or third generation migrants of Mumbai and they are not happy with this as expected. |

As for the resident families with more buying power they are moving in to the suburbs and commuting for more than an hour daily to work. The Mumbai population that commutes daily is another cause for concern while city planners hope to begin newer business districts to prevent major traffic problems. Then we have the huge environmental concerns with experts warning of rising sea levels around the coast of cities like Mumbai which will be forcing its colossal population to move inland to smaller cities in the future. There will be unimaginable losses if Mumbai does go under water if steps are not taken to prevent global warming. |
